El Salado Estuary in Puerto Vallarta

An estuary is a partly enclosed coastal body of water, where salinity is significantly reduced due to the rivers and streams flowing into it. The “El Salado” estuary has contributed to the welfare of our destination as a source of drinking water and home to many species.

It is located in the municipality of Puerto Vallarta and is considered an urban estuary, as it is completely surrounded by the urban sprawl of the port. It is connected to the ocean by a permanent mouth, which was modified during the sixties and eighties to form what is now the dock port and the yacht marina. Geographically it is located between parallels 20° 39’ 21" and 20° 41’ 37" north latitude and meridians 105° 13’ 34" and 105° 15’ 51" west longitude.

According to the Management Plan of El Salado Estuary, published in the Official Journal of the State of Jalisco, four different types of vegetation have been identified: deciduous forest, mangrove forest and both aquatic and underwater vegetation. The mangrove is the dominant vegetation type in the region, covering 125.6 hectares.

Studies carried out in the area have identified more than 100 species of birds, grouped in 23 families of both terrestrial and aquatic habitats. Studies show that the presence and abundance of these species varies throughout the year. In addition, there are 29 amphibian species and reptiles, 10 species of mammals and a variety of fish and invertebrates typical of mangrove areas.

Its greatest water contributions occur during the rainy season (June to November), mainly by the flow of streams into it. Its connection to the ocean is permanent through a channel of about 20m wide, 3m deep and 2km long.
The estuary is strongly protected by the population and the authorities.

ADIOS LONDRES... BIENVENIDO RIO!!!

The London 2012 Olympics have ended with a spectacular musical closing ceremony and the official handover to the next host city, Rio de Janeiro. The three-hour show featured some of the biggest names of British pop from decades past, including the Spice Girls, George Michael and Elbow. Games chief Lord Coe said: “When our time came – Britain, we did it right.”

The official Games flag was handed to the mayor of Rio before the flame at the Olympic Stadium was extinguished.

President of the International Olympic Committee, Jacques Rogge, who declared the Games of the 30th Olympiad closed just before midnight, said: “We will never forget the smiles, the kindness and the support of the wonderful volunteers, the much-needed heroes of these Games.

“You, the spectators and the public, provided the soundtrack for these Games. “Your enthusiastic cheers energised its competitors and brought a festive spirit to every Olympic venue.”Best of British.

At the close of the ceremony, watched in the stadium by the 10,000 athletes and 80,000 spectators, the flame was extinguished in dramatic fashion. Each nation will receive one of the cauldron’s 204 petals.

As fireworks went off above the east London stadium, the Who performed My Generation and the venue became a sea of red, white and blue confetti. The finale, which began with Big Ben chiming, paid tribute to UK music, fashion and culture. Prince Harry represented the Queen at the ceremony, which took place on top of a stage in the shape of a union jack and saw a volunteer cast of 3,500.

The show saw the Spice Girls re-form to sing Spice Up Your Life from the top of five London taxis, and a surprise performance from Take That, who sang their hit Rule the World.

Brazilian football legend Pele, the man widely regarded as the best football player of all time, made a surprise appearance at the London 2012 Olympics closing ceremony as he helped Rio de Janeiro take on the mantle as the next host city of the Olympic Games at Olympic Park.

The artistic segment titled ‘Embrace’ was the brainchild of creative directors Cao Hamburger and Daniela Thomas. Dancing at the Rio Carnival every year, was joined on stage by popular Brazilian singer Marisa Monte, rapper BNegao, actor Seu Jorge and model Alessandra Ambrosio.

Brazilian dancers also took to the centre of the arena for a colourful segment that celebrated Rio’s mix of cultures, music and dance, bringing a carnival atmosphere to the proceedings. But the highlight came as an unidentified man walked onto the stage, removing his hat and taking off his coat to reveal the unmistakable yellow number 10 shirt of the Brazilian football team that made Pele one of the most iconic sportsmen in sport. Pele hugged Sorriso as a giant inflatable of the Rio 2016 Olympic logo unfolded on the centre stage.

“It is a very proud and significant moment to receive the Olympic flag for the next Olympic Games,” said Rio de Janeiro 2016 President Carlos Arthur Nuzman. “We wanted to give the world a taster of what to expect for 2016 with our segment within the closing ceremony,” he added. “We have been very impressed by the London 2012 Olympic Games and we will be returning to Rio de Janeiro with many valuable insights from our time here in London and we look forward to welcoming the world to our city in four years’ time,” he concluded.

The infrastructure for the preparation of the Games is really impressive. There will be more than 100,000 people involved directly in the organization of the Games, including 70,000 volunteers. Millions in the city, in the country and in the continent will be reached by the games. More than 10,500 athletes of about 205 nations around the world are expected to come to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, besides thousands of media professional, fans of sport and tourists from all over the globe.

VOLADORES OF PAPANTLA IN PUERTO VALLARTA

Walking on the Malecon in downtown Puerto Vallarta, tourists can be found gathered staring straight up to a pole high above the malecon. They are staring up at 5 men atop a pole, spinning fearlessly by foot, to the ground. Los Voladores de Papantla, a Totonaco prehispanic rite is performed by dancers for the enjoyment of tourists. Originally these dances were performed to ask the gods for plentiful rain that will make the land fertile.

According to Totonac myth, the gods told men, “Dance, and we shall observe.” Today, pleasing the gods of old is still a part of the most traditional version of the ritual.

Totonac dress for this ritual consists of a red pants with a white shirt, a cloth across the chest and a cap. The pants, hat and chest cloth are heavily embroidered and otherwise decorated. The cloth across the chest symbolized blood. The hat is adorned with flowers for fertility, mirrors represent the sun and from the top stream multicolored ribbons representing the rainbow.

The ceremony begins with a dance and song type called a “son.” Usually the initial song played and danced to is called the “son of forgiveness. After this, the five begin to climb the pole with the chief or “caporal” going first. The caporal will not descend but rather will stay at the top of the pole until near the end of the ceremony. The caporal stands on a capstan, called a manzana (apple) which is a small platform at the top of the pole. From this capstan is suspended a square frame called a cuadro (square) on which the other four voladores sit.

While these four wind the ropes around the pole and tie themselves to the ends, the caporal plays the flute and drum acknowledging the four cardinal directions, beginning with the east because it is believed life came from this direction. The four ropes are each wound thirteen times for a total of fifty two, the number of years in a Mesoamerican great year. The caporal then bends fully backwards to acknowledge the sun, playing all the while.

The four voladores represent the four cardinal directions as well as the four elements: earth, air, fire and water. The caporal represents the fifth sun. The four voladores seated on the cuadro face the caporal and at the appropriate moment fall backwards to descend to the ground suspended by the wound ropes. As the ropes unwind, the voladores spin, creating a moving pyramid shape. As the other voladores descend the caporal plays the “son of goodbye” and dances on the narrow platform Traditionally, after the descent, there is another dance of goodbye.

The Ritual Ceremony of the Voladores of Papantla has been recognized as Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) by UNESCO in 2009.

This risky ritual can be seen along the malecon in the evening. Several shows are performed for tips only each night. Bring your camera, and don't miss this uniquely Mexican show.

HISTORIC & COLORFUL: PUERTO VALLARTA´S RIO CUALE MARKET

A wise man once said, in order to appreciate any town, you must first take a stroll along their main plaza, church and market. Moral of the story: to truly take in all that Puerto Vallarta has to offer, make sure to visit its Rio Cuale Market.

The Rio Cuale Market is one of Puerto Vallarta’s oldest neighborhoods: rich in tradition and history. Located in the midst of historic downtown Vallarta, you are sure to find the perfect souvenir from your visit, albeit traditional garb, jewelry, crafts, etc.

The present facilities were inaugurated on November 28th 1979 by then Governor Flavio Romero Velasco and Mayor Eugenio Torres Ramírez. Back then, the square served more as a farmer’s market catering to the people’s needs with meat and fish stands, fresh produce, etc. It wasn’t until the 1980’s that it began to take a more tourist-friendly approach.

Now a day the market has a total of 155 stores, of which 18 are food-related, and 137 sell other miscellaneous commodities. The Rio Cuale Market is made up of two floors where you can find nicnacks like: key chains, t-shirts, coffee and tea mugs, beach dresses, hats, wrestling masks, bathing suits, and an infinite amount of traditional Mexican souvenirs. Don't forget to check out one of the small restaurants serving breakfast, lunch and dinner.

The Rio Cuale is a reference point in town, point of development and cultural roots of Puerto Vallarta. If you stand right there and look towards the mountain you will find the spectacular natural stage where Canopy River has its facilities. Just 30 minutes from Puerto Vallarta downtown.
